In 2017 as part of a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Marble Hill Playcentres presented a special display featuring films, photographs and audio recordings looking back on the site’s 40 year history. Throughout that summer, children, parents and playworkers shared their memories of the Adventure Playground and One O’Clock Club in the lead-up to the display, which opened to visiting children from 23 August and to the wider public on 26 August and 16 September 2017.
In-keeping with the child-led ethos of the playcentres, many of the interviews were led by children who attend regularly. Parents who used to come as toddlers and teenagers also took part. The display offers insights into the importance of adventure play and captures reflections on changing attitudes to playing out since 1975 in and around Richmond and Twickenham.
Also featured are a series of present-day images of the playground and its users by photographer Dan Weill.
A small number of images are included here, with a full display to be included in the coming weeks.
